Thematic formatives and linguistic theory
Both in traditional grammars and in contemporary formal approaches, theme vowels are typically analyzed as syntactically and semantically empty components of verb morphology. The opposing view holds that they contribute to syntactico-semantic composition. The articles in this volume examine both positions, drawing on data from Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages.
